Michael says he has always enjoyed teaching. “There is just something amazing about working with a horse and rider separately and then being able to put it together to create a lasting partnership”. Michael says the turning point for him was when he gave his first solo clinic. “It was there that I realized that there is nothing common about horse sense. I haven’t just been living for 26 years; I’ve been being educated and groomed by some of the greatest horsemen this world has to offer. This is my chance to give back and share my knowledge and experience with the public”. Michael says he wants to help people enjoy their horses and stay safe doing it.
Michael believes there is no such thing as an un-trainable horse. It’s all about trust, understanding and learning to read the horses. What works for one horse/rider, might not work for another. You have to think outside the box and accept each horse and rider’s unique individual personality and capability. That's what makes the job of trainer and clinician so challenging and at the same time so rewarding.
Generations of Expertise
Michael comes from five generations of professional horse trainers. It is only natural that he was born with the same passion for training and Riding that he grew up watching and learning every day on the families lovely southern Ranch.
Michael’s father, Jaime Gascon, learned to ride from his father who was a Champion rider, trainer, and Performer as was his father before him and his father before him . The Gascon family owned trained and preformed some amazing feats with their stunning string of trained Andalusian horses in the families home country of Spain. As a one time student of the Legendary Spanish Riding Academy Mr. Jamie was learning Dressage when most kids his age were learning to play t-ball. This early exposure to gentle training methods while teaching the highest level of horse training and horsemanship informs everything the Gascon family does.
Jaime (Michael's Father) is a world renowned Paso Fino trainer and one of only a handful of "MASTER Paso Fino Trainer's" in the world today. Together as a family, they run a very successful training and breeding Horse Ranch which has bred, trained, and exhibited some of the most famous home bred Gaited Paso Fino Champion horses in the world.
Michael’s considers his father to be his biggest idol . One of Michael’s favorite memories is from when he was only 4 years old. He and his parents traveled to Puerto Rico So that His father could Show their the now Legendary Paso Fino Stallion, Principe de Besilu at the World Cup.
In Michael’s own words:
“I can remember my father riding Principe, one of the biggest Fino Stallions of that time. We were watching him compete in front of a sold out arena with standing room only, in a country that is famous for quality Paso Fino horses. It was the last work off of the night and the judges were trying to make the final selections of winners for the world championships. There were horses from literally all over the globe competing, Every country wanting to win the coveted World Champion Fino Stallion title for themselves. The competition was intense and the quality of horses was..... well the best in the WORLD. My Mom was holding my hand so tight, I thought it was going to break. It felt like the entire universe was holding it's breath. When they announced my dads name over the loudspeaker the crowd Went crazy! My Mom ran towards the gate, me behind her like a flag in the wind. My Dad makes a victory lap at a full run with a sliding stop at the gate before getting tackled by my mom! Everyone was crying and the crowd ERUPTED in shouting and clapping and chants of PRINCIPE!!! around us! My Dad held up that gorgeous shinny cup and I can just remember thinking "One day that's going be me!”
Michael’s Mother, Cindi Gascon, was raised on a 400 head working Quarter Horse Ranch in Wyoming. Her family were all professional horse-people and on their spacious ranch in the rolling hills of Wyoming they raised some of the worlds top halter horses, barrel horses, and western pleasure horses ever to grace the rings of both horse shows and rodeos worldwide. Ms. Cindi has always been at the top of her sport whether riding for the show ring (English and western) or making a run in the PRCA on one of her famous barrel horses, Cindi Gascon was always had the heart of a champion. She is one of the youngest woman to ever win Congress (Quarter Horse National Championships). Cindi retired from competing when Michael was born, and has supported Michael through all of his endeavors.
