The Story of Principe at the world cup in Puerto Rico
I can remember my father riding and training Principe de Besilu, one of the finest Paso Fino Stallions of that time. I was just a kid but even then I knew, Principe was one of the great ones. I watched my Dad training and working with him every day, developing both his muscles and his mind. They were working toward the goal of being the world champion Fino stallion.
Principe Goes to Puerto Rico
That Year the world Championships were being held in Puerto Rico. We made reservations to fly both Principe and my father over several months early so they could become accustomed to the climate and venue. Principe de Besilu became a big favorite at the barn he was stabled at and always had his share of admirers and visitors during the lazy Puerto Rican summer days.
FINALLY the day arrived
My mother and I boarded a plane bound for Puerto Rico. I was super excited to travel and watch my dad (Jaime Gascon) show our Stallion and make a bid for the WORLD championship!
We were watching him compete in front of a sold out arena with standing room only, in a country that is famous for high quality Paso Fino horses. It was the last work off of the night and the judges were trying to make the final selections of winners for the world championships. There were horses from literally all over the globe competing. Every country wanted to win the coveted World Champion Fino Stallion title. The competition was intense and the quality of horses was..... Well the best in the WORLD.
Principe De Besilu and Jamie Gascon
My Mom was holding my hand so tight; I thought it was going to break. It felt like the entire universe was holding its breath. When they announced my dad’s name over the loudspeaker the crowd went crazy! My Mom ran towards the gate, me behind her like a flag in the wind. My Dad made a victory lap at a full run with a sliding stop at the gate before getting tackled by my mom! Everyone was crying and the crowd ERUPTED in shouting and clapping and chants of PRINCIPE!!! My Dad held up that gorgeous shinny cup and I can just remember thinking "One day that's going be me!”. That was the day I decided I wanted to become a professional Horse trainer. I couldn't imagine any other life that would bring me the joy and excitement of training horses to compete with the best in the world. I'm very grateful for the opportunities I have been given to train with many world class trainers. I owe my success to all of them.
